Disruptive Business UK – Why we support the charity Mind
Business can provide the most exhilarating of human experiences, for example when a team is successful, or a person achieves a long-term work goal. But business can also cause the most crushing of emotional pain, perhaps when a project fails, or a work role has to be made redundant.
At Disruptive Business, we truly believe that being in business, being a part of a business and working, collaborating with others, fulfils so many of our fundamental emotional and intellectual needs. Statistics demonstrate time and time again that people within gainful employment generally have tremendously better mental health than when unemployed and without a working direction.
If any member of your staff should contract a physical illness, it is well understood that this is reported immediately and the business will work with their staff to ensure that good health returns quickly and work demands are managed accordingly. Sadly, there is still very much a stigma (both real and sometimes imagined) with mental health issues, where many people believe that they dare not, or cannot reveal their issues, for fear of the “three D’s” – Dismissal, Demotion, other further Depression due to their colleague’s poor response. As such Mental health issues in the work place represents one of the few unacceptable remaining taboos. This must change, for the sake of our society, our staff and our businesses.
Mind – An English registered charity, are at the forefront of raising awareness of this issue and in educating businesses and all workers on how stigma is so wrong and with the same process and care that we apply to physical health issues, businesses and staff can successfully manage mental health issues to arrive at wonderful and positive outcomes. Please see https://www.mind.org.uk/workplace/ for more detail on this.
We encourage all businesses to consider the work of Mind, and if they too would like to support them in any way – via donations, activities, or buying their such as their information booklets. Please see their on-line store for more information. https://shop.mind.org.uk/shop .
Remember it is possible that the person next to you is suffering a mental health issue, but in a lonely silence and with a brave face to mask their trauma and pain – yet they feel unable to communicate this to you or anyone else in your work place. Let’s end this outdated thinking and raise awareness in every workplace and business today. Thank You.
